Karolyn K.Riggins

Obituaries - Dubuque Today by the Dubuque Advertiser (3)Karolyn Kay Riggins, age 79, of Dubuque, IA, formerly of Marshalltown, IA, completed her earthly journey on May 30, 2024, at Mercy Hospital in Dubuque. To honor Karolyn’s life, a private family service is being held. The Tri-State Cremation Center is humbly serving Karolyn’s family.

Karolyn was born on July 11, 1944, in Marshalltown, IA, a daughter to Joe and Marie (Talbert) Kopel. She was blessed to spend the majority of her life in the Marshalltown area surrounded by family and friends through each day. Karolyn was a wonderful wife and mother who found her greatest joy in loving and nurturing her family. There was no happier place in her life than playing this role to the best of her abilities. In her free-time, Karolyn always took advantage of every opportunity to spend time with the horses. An afternoon in the barn was always considered to be time well spent. She also took time to enjoy the simple pleasures in life. A little Glenn Miller Orchestra on the radio, or a few episodes of Perry Mason on the tv were among her favorites, and to relax and enjoy either with a rice krispie treat in hand was all the better in her mind. We know her affinity for Pizza Ranch was also well known and appreciated by those around her and we’ll never forget our last visit ending with her content and joyful smile residing peacefully upon her beautiful face. Again, enjoying the simple moments and leaving all stress and complication behind intentionally. Karolyn embraced life with a touch of spunk when required and always with a tender heart. It’s difficult to imagine life moving forward with the pain of loss we face today, but we accept that Karolyn needed to finally have rest from her earthly battles and trust that she will be peacefully and patiently waiting for us all to rejoin her in time. Thank you, Karolyn, for the love, lessons, and legacy you leave behind and may the Lord keep you safe and secure in His loving arms until we meet again.

Those left behind to cherish the memory of Karolyn include: her two daughters, Janice (Earl) Waltemeyer, Marshalltown, IA, and Lisa (Dan) Starn, Marshalltown, IA; her five grandchildren, Nikki (Matt) Adelmund, Dubuque, IA, Colton Burrell, Marshalltown, IA, Deven (Shane Pollard Starn) Starn, Des Moines, IA, Cameren Starn, Marshalltown, IA, and Nolan (Haylie Owens-Starn) Starn, LeGrand, IA; her five great-grandchildren, Laycee Adelmund, Aaron Adelmund, Kadance Adelmund, Teddy Starn, and Jack Starn; her brother, Richard Kopel, Pleasant Hill, IA; along with numerous extended family, friends, and neighbors.

Karolyn was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, Robert Riggins and Leroy Skees; and her sister-in-law, Frances Kopel.

Karolyn’s family would like to thank the nurses and staff at Mercy Hospital and Hospice of Dubuque for all of their professional and compassionate care.

Sidney W. Scott

Obituaries - Dubuque Today by the Dubuque Advertiser (10)Sidney William Scott, 81, of Dubuque, passed away June 3, 2024, after living with Alzheimer’s dementia for the past few years. Sid was born on December 8, 1942 to Ralph and Helen (Bean) Scott in Galesburg, IL. He was united in marriage to Janice (Smith) Scott on August 20, 1966 in Peoria, IL. They moved from Peoria to Dubuque in 1977. Janice served as his primary caregiver for the last years of his life.

Sid earned a degree in studio art from Illinois State University in 1968 and an MBA from Bradley University in 1977. His 50+ year career included leadership positions in art, marketing, public relations, and organizational development for three media corporations–The Peoria Journal Star, Tazwell Publishing, and Woodward Communications, Inc. (WCI)– and he served as the business manager for Mercy Radiologists for several years. Simultaneously, Sid ran two one-man businesses: Scott Graphics in the early years and Scott Consultants, LLC from the mid-1980s on. He also served as an adjunct faculty member at the Beyster Institute, Rady School of Business, UC-San Diego, UW-Platteville, UW-Madison, Clarke College, and Cardinal Stritch College. Sid retired from WCI in 2008 as the VP of Human Resources. He was the author of over 200 articles in national and local trade publications and made over 100 presentations at meetings of the Employee Stock Ownership Program (ESOP) Association, the National Center for Employee Ownership (NCEO), the Inland Press Association, the Society for Human Resource Management, and the American Society of Training and Development. From 1994 to 2006, Sid served on the board of NCEO, serving as co-chair for the last two years, and he was a founding officer and President of the ESOP Association’s Nebraska-Iowa chapter. Sid was especially proud of his instrumental role in helping WCI become a 97% employee-owned corporation. After retiring, he joined the WCI Board of Directors, serving as its chair from 2012-2016.

From 1964 to 1970, Sid served in the Illinois Army National Guard as a Specialist E-5. In the last years of his life he was especially keen to revisit cherished memories of this time, including his active duty in the Chicago Riots of 1968 after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King. In both Peoria and Dubuque, Sid was an engaged citizen who participated in community service and fundraising activities for a long list of organizations including (but not limited to) American Red Cross, United Way, Multiple Sclerosis Society, American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, Dubuque Area Large Employers Health Care Coalition, First Congregational Church- United Church of Christ, Dubuque Chamber of Commerce, Downtown Rotary, Dubuque Museum of Art, Dubuque Chorale, Northeast Iowa School of Music, and the Dubuque chapter of PFLAG. In 2003, he was selected by Iowa Governor Vilsack to serve a six-year term on the Iowa Health Facilities Council.

The contribution for which Sid will be most fondly remembered by his family and many friends is his musicianship. As a teenager in the heyday of early rock and roll, “Bill” caught the bug. He took a few years of lessons but was a mostly self-taught musician who could pick up any instrument and play it. Primarily a keyboardist, he was in several bands over the years, including The Misfits in the 1960s and most recently, Sid V and the Human Resources, which was formed at his WCI retirement party and went on to play regional gigs for 15 years. Music was Sid’s happy place and he kept to the keyboard until just a few days before he passed.

Sid is survived by his wife, Janice; his children, Britain Scott (Russ Lake) of Hudson, WI, Erin Scott of Woodbury, MN, and Ryan Scott of Dubuque; grandchildren Renn Elkins of St. Paul, MN and Sylvie Lake of Hudson, WI; his brother Steve (Joan) Scott of El Paso, IL and nephews Matt (Nikki) Scott and Michael Scott, both of Illinois.

Sid’s family would like to offer special thanks to Home Instead care providers and Egelhof, Siegert and Casper Funeral Home and Crematory. Kindly direct any memorials to the Alzheimer’s Association, the National Museum of the United States Army, or First Congregational Church-United Church of Christ in Dubuque.

The family is planning a celebration of Sid’s life in late July. Details about the date and venue will be forthcoming on social media.

William E. Spiegel

Obituaries - Dubuque Today by the Dubuque Advertiser (12)William E. “Billy” Spiegel, age 81, of Epworth, IA, completed his earthly journey on June 3, 2024, at home, while surrounded by his loving family. To honor Billy’s life, please join us for his Celebration of Life at Locals Bar and Coffee Shop, 107 West Main Street in Epworth, on Sunday, June 23, 2024, from 1-5 pm. The Tri-State Cremation Center is humbly serving Billy’s family.

Billy was born on November 18, 1942, to Albert and Bernadine (Burds) Spiegel. One could say that Billy was a social introvert, a man of few words, and a man of a serious nature in all areas of life. Billy’s daily motto was ‘allwork and no play,’ which in turn made his life relatively dull and boring. One could certainly say those things, but those comments wouldbe as far from the truth as one could get. For those who knew and loved Billy, and even those who simply crossed his path by random chance, knew heloved life, and didn’t take it too seriously. He never found himself in a moment that couldn’t be improved with one of his many good jokes, pranks, or humorous one-liners, followed by his unforgettable laugh. His home and work life were blessed, not only because he was surrounded by family and friends that he adored, but undeniably because of his physical presence within both as well. He was united in marriage to the one he always loved and adored, LuAnn Pitz, in 1964, and from that point on, life would never be the same in every good way that you could imagine. Billy owned Spiegel Construction Excavating in Epworth for many years, with the last twenty-five years being with his son, Nathan as his partner. He took great pride while driving around the area and reflecting on the countless projects he was involved in. Billy’s goal each day was to make someone’s day better, work hard, do quality work, and laugh often with those he encountered.

Billy enjoyed sports of all kinds and played baseball for years in the area, even being inducted into the Dubuque County Baseball Hall of Fame in 2008. He enjoyed playing baseball so much that he played on Doubleday Field in Cooperstown, New York, Arizona, and Las Vegas when he was in his 60’s with his oldest son, Chris and his sons. When the Yankee’s were taking the field, Billy gave that game his undivided attention. If a good game of Euchre or 5 Crowns was about to break out, Billy was going to grab a seat at the table and gently remind everyone who truly possessed the skills to win and if he was feeling sympathetic, he may even allow you to win a hand or two just for good measure. Billy’s greatest joy was any time his grandchildren were by his side. It’s difficult to imagine that there’s another Grandpa out there who played this role so perfectly, but he would definitely allow you to think so if it made you feel better. We are all happier and better people for having known Billy, and our world is a better place for having him in it. May the Lord bless and keep you in His grace-filled arms until we all see your contagious smile once again.

Those left behind to cherish the memory of Billy include,

his wife of 60 years, LuAnn Spiegel;

his proud children, Chris Spiegel, Rebecca (Peter) Smith, Abby Spiegel, and Nathan (Tammy) Spiegel;

his fourteen grandchildren that love him dearly, Billy Spiegel, Cayden Spiegel, Shelby Spiegel, Emmalyne Smith (Richie Leahy), Elijah (Amanda) Sifuentes-Smith, Josephine Smith, (Andy Vujnovich), Sophia Smith (Adam Wessels), Augustine Smith, Isaiah Smith, Abraham Smith, Samuel Smith, Nellie Welsh (Andrew Keay), Lilly Welsh (Walker Ochs), and Atticus Welsh;

his siblings, Gerrie (Marv) Roling, A.J. Spiegel, Mary (Buzz) McDermott, and Bob Spiegel;

his brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert (Dorothy) Pitz, Steve (Judy) Pitz, Karen Wendt, Bonnie Pitz, Janet Pitz, Mary (Mark) Brown, and Deby Oberfoell;

along with numerous extended family, friends, and neighbors.

Billy was preceded in death by his parents; his mother and father-in-law, Bill and Marie Pitz; his four grandsons, Skylar Hootmann, C.J. Spiegel, Lucas Spiegel, and Cyril Smith; his brother, Bobby Spiegel; and his brothers-in-law, David Pitz, Ronnie Pitz, and Jeff Oberfoell.

Billy’s family would like to thank the nurses and staff at Hospice of Dubuque for their professional and compassionate care. We would also like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all of our family, friends and neighbors who have been so generous. We cannot thank you enough for all of the love we have been showered with during these very difficult days and we pray that the Lord blessed each and every one of you for your kindnesses.

To quote Billy…“You never work a day in your life if you love what you do” and “I loved my life”

Pam was born on December 9, 1965, in Cedar Rapids, IA, a daughter to Melvern W. and Linda W. (Clark) Osterkamp. Crafting with them and simply having them by her side was truly Pam’s happy place. It’s difficult to imagine the world moving forward without her serious, yet humbly loving personality, but we know that she fought her earthly battle with cancer courageously and it was now time for her to rest from her struggles. Thank you, Pam, for being a wonderful mother and grandmother whose legacy will live on in the lives of those left behind and we pray that you are resting peacefully in the loving arms of God as we await our eternal reunion with you once again in time.

Those left behind to cherish the memory of Pam include,

her three sons,

James Cosley

Obituaries - Dubuque Today by the Dubuque Advertiser (41)James “Jim” Cosley, 95, gained his angel wings on May 28, 2024, at Stonehill Care Center in Dubuque. After a long and blessed life, he was fortunate to have a beautiful last few days on earth, surrounded by his loving family and friends. He wouldn’t have wanted it any other way, though he would have never admitted it, and yet he certainly deserved no less.

Visitation will be held from 9:00 am until 10:15 am on Friday, May 31, 2024 at St. Anthony Catholic Church.

The Mass of Christian Burial for James will be 10:30 am Friday, May 31, 2024, at St. Anthony Catholic Church with Father Steven Rosonke as the Celebrant. Entombment will be at Mount Calvary Cemetery in Dubuque. Full military honors will be rendered by American Legion Post #6 and the Iowa Army National Guard.

Jim was born on March 11, 1929, in Dubuque, Iowa, the only child of Harold and Viola Cosley. He graduated from Dubuque Senior High School, class of 1947. He married Marian T. Kirchberg on September 4, 1950 at St. Patrick Catholic Church. Together they were lifelong parishioners of St. Anthony Church in Dubuque, Iowa. After 66 years of a wonderful marriage, she preceded him in death on November 30, 2016. Jim had very much been looking forward to being reunited with Marian everyday since.

Jim served in the 34th Division, 133rd Infantry Regiment, Headquarters Company of the Iowa National Guard. He was a Master Sergeant and a Platoon Leader. He was also a member of the American Legion Dubuque Post 6.

Jim was a Real Estate Broker for 46 years in Dubuque. He was a member of the Dubuque Board of Realtors, the Iowa Association of Realtors, and the National Association of Realtors. Jim was the President of the Dubuque Board of Realtors in 1973. He was the Vice President of Carris Construction Company for several years in the late 1950’s through the 1960s. He supervised home construction projects for several years and had a great knowledge of the home construction industry in Dubuque. He was proud to be a charter member of the Student Built Home Project sponsored by the Dubuque Board of Realtors. Jim also served 35 years on the Eminent Domain Commission of the Dubuque County Supervisors.

In his leisure time, Jim was a member of the Mississippi Walleye Club of Dubuque. He loved to hunt, fish, read, and travel. He enjoyed annual trips to Spooner, WI to fish the area lakes with his family. Jim also made several fishing trips to Sioux Lookout, Ontario, Canada to fish the lakes for walleye and trout.

Jim loved life, had a zest for it, and was so very good at it! He was the perfect blend of humility and confidence. His personality was contagious. Even at 95, his humor was spot on. When recently asked by a nurse what year his birthday was, he responded, without missing a beat, “every year!” Throughout his lifetime, he had his hands in a number of things, but mostly identified as a realtor, running Cosley Reality for a number of years. Realty was a great way for him to get to know and meet people. People were his passion – and perhaps his biggest gift. He made friends wherever he went. He had natural charisma and charm that made every situation better. Jim will be missed by many, but his family is so proud of him. He fought the good fight, he finished the race, and he kept the faith.

Jim’s Catholic faith and his family were the most important things in his life. He was very dedicated and devout. In addition to attending mass regularly, he recited thousands of rosaries and chaplets for those he loved throughout his lifetime, and passed with his beloved rosary in his hands.

In addition to his wife, Marian, he was preceded in death by his parents Harold and Viola Cosley , his son David Cosley (January 8, 2024), and his in-laws George, Amelia, Lorraine, and George Jr. Kirchberg.

The family would like to offer their sincere thanks and appreciation to Hospice of Dubuque and Stonehill Care Center. Jim spent the last 3.5 years of his life at Stonehill. Like a lot of people, he had no interest in being in a nursing home. However, as the months turned to years, Stonehill became his home and the staff and residents became like family. The care they provided and the friendship they offered will never be forgotten.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to St. Anthony Parish or Stonehill.

Judi Palmer

Obituaries - Dubuque Today by the Dubuque Advertiser (45)Judi Palmer, 80, of Dubuque, died Monday, May 27, 2024, at the Luther Manor in Dubuque.

Visitation will be from 9:00 am until 10:45 am on Friday, May 31, 2024 at Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home & Crematory.

The Funeral Service for Judi will be at 11:00 am on Friday, May 31, 2024, at Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home & Crematory.

Judi was born December 8, 1943, in Des Moines, the daughter of Sidney and Lois (Paulson) Palmer. In 1967, she married Gari McDermott, they later divorced.

Judi was a very artistic person, she played the drums, was a dance instructor, and enjoyed singing. She also enjoyed knitting and crafting. Judith also loved animals, especially seeing the penguins at the zoo.

Survivors include her five children, Beth McDermott of Chicago, IL; Jeff McDermott of Dubuque; Russ McDermott of Dickeyville; Shawn McDermott of Dubuque; and Daniel K. McDermott of St. Paul, MN; two grandchildren, Garrett R. McDermott and Calla Mae McDermott.

Besides her parents she was preceded in death by two brothers, Roland and Jon Palmer.

Now, let’s tell you a story about our Mom… You won’t believe it, I don’t even believe 1/2 of it and I’ve seen the pictures. Her early adult life sounds like something out of a Hollywood biopic: Judi was a beatnik playing jazz clubs in New York, then a showgirl performing in a chorus line (not the show, but what the show was about) alongside a young Barbara Streisand. At some point she was performing in Vegas, dating a notorious mobster, and regularly hanging out with Sammy Davis Jr, and Joey Bishop. She knew Ray Charles, Michael Landon, and yes, she shook Frank Sinatra’s hand. Then one night while rehearsing a big production number, tragedy struck when she fell off a ladder and broke her back. She spent 2 years in traction followed by many years of rehabilitation.

Along the way she met my Dad, got married, had 5 kids, and made a home in Alta, IA. Mom was a dedicated homemaker and a doting parent, but she had too much talent to hold inside! So first in the living room, then in a storage room behind the local salon, and ultimately in a place all her own, she owned and operated a premiere dance studio with a reputation for excellence and a host of students that stretched from the MN border to Sioux City, IA.

Sadly, Mom’s later life is filled with bad decisions and devastating consequences, and by age 70 she had developed serious respiratory issues and dementia. She could no longer provide for herself, so she lived the last several years comfortable and well cared for at Luther Manor in Dubuque.

She’s been many things to many people: dancer, musician, showgirl, teacher, entrepreneur, wife, mother, friend, confidante, lover, and always a fighter, but to me she was just “Mom”, and she was my hero… The last time I saw her, in a fleeting moment of lucidity, she suddenly recognized me, told me she loved me, and said she could feel her time was coming soon. I said I love her too, told her how proud I am of her for living life on her own terms, and let her know it’s ok to rest now.

She passed away peacefully at 2:19AM on May 27, 2024… Memorial Day, of course.

May the Lord bless her and keep her. May the Lord make their face shine upon her and be gracious to her. And may the Lord lift up Their countenance upon her and give her peace.

Goodnight Mom, flights of angels sing the to thy rest… We’ll see you on the other side ♥️

Fabian F. Barry

Obituaries - Dubuque Today by the Dubuque Advertiser (47)Fabian F. Barry, age 59, of Dubuque, IA, was greeted by his heavenly family on May 25, 2024. He passed peacefully at home while surrounded by loved ones. To honor Fabian’s life, a Celebration of Life for family and friends will be held at Paul’s Tap following burial at the Mt. Olivet Cemetery, where full military honors will be accorded by the Dubuque Marine Corps League. The Tri-State Cremation Center is humbly serving Fabian’s family.

Fabian was born on July 17, 1964, in Bellevue, IA, a son to Donald J. and Elizabeth “Betty” (Burns) Barry. As one of the youngest of ten siblings, his early years were shaped by the lively challenge of keeping up with his older brothers and sisters. Fabian spent his life giving more of his time, talents, and energy to his family and friends than he would ever consider taking. He honorably served his county with the Iowa National Guard and the U.S. Army, while devoting his working career in the construction trades. Fabian worked on countless projects around the area with the Iowa Labor Union and also spent many years working with friends at Bries Construction, Custom Concrete, and Tschiggfrie Excavating Co. He made work entertaining and memorable for all those on the crew and was respected for his exceptional construction skills. Fabian could build, fix, and create anything and took pride in doing quality work.

In his free-time, Fabian found many delights in life. An avid collector of Budweiser memorabilia was only the beginning. A perfect day for Fabian was riding his Harley under a sunny sky, followed by an evening around the pool table. He never passed up the opportunity to go fishing or grill food for family and friends. But, for those who knew and loved Fabian most, his family and friends were always top priority in his life. Enjoying the day with his grandchildren, visiting his siblings, or gathering with others at Paul’s Tap or Georgie’s Skyline was where he felt most at ease.

As we look to the difficult days ahead, we find comfort remembering Fabian’s heart of gold and ironic, witty sense of humor that will continue to resonate throughout the lives of those who knew and loved him. His family and friends will miss him dearly. We are especially thankful there are innumerable joyful memories for us to lean into during this time of heartache. Thank you, Fabian, for simply being you. You are a legend to our family and to all those who had the honor of knowing your caring and loving heart. May the Lord bless and keep you until we meet again.

Those left behind to cherish the memory of Fabian include:

his two children,
Christian M. Barry, Neponset, IL,

and Ellen “Ellie” (Matthew) Stuckey, Dubuque, IA;

along with numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, friends, and neighbors.

George W. Bookless Jr.

Obituaries - Dubuque Today by the Dubuque Advertiser (48)George W. Bookless, Jr., 81, a long-time resident of Galena, Illinois, passed away on May 24, 2024, after suffering from congestive heart failure and its complications. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. The Furlong Funeral Chapel, Galena is assisting the family. George was born in Terre Haute, IN, on October 12, 1942.

He grew up in Franklin Park, IL, where his parents moved after World War II. His father served in an Army Air Force photographic unit, so George always had a darkroom to fool around in as a boy. He graduated from Knox College with a BA in English and a Minor in Biology. Not decided on a career, a college classmate suggested he speak to Sargeant Shriver about the Peace Corps, and so off he went in 1965 for an assignment in Nigeria, where a civil war began shortly after his arrival, making him witness horrible suffering and atrocities. He served as Senior Education Officer attached to the Schools Broadcasting Unit of the Ministry of Education. In addition to writing and directing television science programs, he became head of the photographic unit and, in his spare time, traveled with the only Peace Corps doctor, helping to dispense medicine and aid to the surrounding villages. He learned to speak Hausa and contracted dengue fever and malaria during his almost 3-year stint and returned to the US in 1968, after receiving his draft notice, weighing only 87 pounds. He taught school briefly, then worked as a producer for Coronet Films in Chicago.

He married Lynn Giles in 1970, who blessed him with two loving children, William and Jennifer. While on assignment photographing eagles, he fell in love with Galena and moved his young family here, where both children were raised, and started a freelance photography business.

On September 19, 1998, he married Kathy Puszczewicz in a ceremony on the front porch of their home on Wight Street in front of many relatives and friends. George served as Alderman at Large for the City of Galena from 2001-2005, where he was instrumental in the downtown reconstruction project; funding, relocation, and construction of the new wastewater treatment plant; development of the bike trail; planning and funding for the renovation of Recreation Park and the swimming pool; and advocating for the relocation of City Hall and the city garage. He also supported Wal Mart coming to Galena but with conditions requiring they meet the city’s terms, not their terms, which they ultimately did.

During his life, George enjoyed camping, fishing, canoeing, hiking, gardening, cooking, sharing stories, and listening to the radio. He loved sitting on the front porch of his home on Wight Street, drinking a beer and smoking cigarettes. When asked what he would like done with his ashes, he half-jokingly said he wanted his brother, John, to shoot them out of a canon and into the sky. So, whenever you hear the cannon boom in Grant Park on July 4and other occasions……. think of George.

George is survived by the best thing that ever happened to him: his loving wife, Kathy; daughter Jennifer (Jay) Stienstra and son William (Susan) Bookless; grandchildren Alexander and Anika Kerkhoven, Billy, and Betty Bookless; sister Joan (Jack) Juhlin; brothers John Bookless and William (Stacy) Bookless; Denmark sister Britha (Jan) Mikkelson; mother-law, Eleanor Puszczewicz; in-laws Linda (Dennis) Fillippo, David Puszczewicz and Al Bonvini, Michael (Dawn) Puszczewicz; Lynn Giles; and many nieces and nephews.

His parents, George W. Bookless Sr., and Wilma Bookless preceded him in death.

The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses & physical therapists at Midwest Medical Center,Hospice of Dubuque, and his many friends, including members of The Cabin Club.

Shirley Maiers

Obituaries - Dubuque Today by the Dubuque Advertiser (55)The world lost one of the good ones this week. Shirley Maiers, 84, of Dubuque, died Thursday, May 23, 2024, at the Grand Meadows in Asbury.

A doer and a socializer, Shirley loved surrounding herself with people, whether that was hosting the family for holidays and special events, organizing card games or golf trips with friends, or donating her time to people in need through her service to the church and the many other charities she selflessly supported. A series of challenges and tragedies during her life taught her the importance of perseverance, resolve, and most of all, a strong connection to family—traits which she instilled in her children and exhibited in everything she did, even at the very end.

Shirley was born April 4, 1940, in Iowa City, IA, the daughter of Frank McPoland and Bernadette Hall. She married Donald Anstoetter On September 30, 1961. Don passed away on November 26, 1973, and Shirley subsequently married Cletus “Clete” E. Maiers on July 22, 1977. Clete passed away on August 25, 2018.

Shirley was a homemaker while her family was young. After Don’s passing, she graduated from Capri College of Cosmetology and opened and operated her own salon, Headhunters. She also worked as a lunch lady for Dubuque Community Schools and a teller for U.S. Bank.

Shirley was a devoted member of the Church of the Resurrection, where she volunteered as a greeter and helped serve funeral meals. Her faith, friends, and family were very important to her. She dedicated much of her time to volunteering, including 30 years with Hospice of Dubuque, serving Wednesday meals at St. Patrick’s, Maria House, Right to Life, Bernadette Circle, ushering at Grand Theatre, and helping with St. Vincent de Paul. An avid card player, she especially enjoyed Poker, Hand and Foot, Euchre, Bridge, and many other games, often playing up to four days a week. She liked to golf, travel, and camp. She loved dining out, especially for breakfast.

Survivors include four children, Brian (Nancy) Anstoetter of West Des Moines, and their children: Ben (Holly Hildreth), Joe, and Jack; Brenda (Mark) Ehlers of Dubuque, and their children: Matt (Bree) and their children, Olive, Maelin, and Ettason, Connor (Mary) and their child, Tilly, and Katie (Chase Bushaw); Brad (Laura) Anstoetter of Walker, IA, and their children: Andrew (Anna Swanson) and Jack; Eric (Kristy) Maiers of Elmhurst, IL, and their children: Norah and Sadie; one sister, Margaret “Ginny” Schiel of Dubuque; and several sisters- and brothers-in-law.

Besides her two husbands, she was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Sam McPoland, five sisters, Theresa, Eileen, Mary, Betty, and Lois, and many brothers- and sisters-in-law.

Visitation will be from 2:00 pm until 6:00 pm Sunday, June 2, 2024 at Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home & Crematory. The Mass of Christian Burial for Shirley will be 10:30 am Monday, June 3, 2024, at Church of the Resurrection with Father Phil Gibbs as the Celebrant. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery in Dubuque.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for Hospice of Dubuque.

The family thanks Dr. Konz and her nurse, Cherie, the staff and nurses at Grand Meadows and Hospice of Dubuque for caring for Shirley. The family also thanks Deacon Mike Ellis and Shirley’s many friends who offered their prayers and support over the years.
