Pinehurst stands apart as a US Open test because of the greens
Pinehurst No. 2 is the site of this year's U.S. Open that starts Thursday. Much was made about replacing rough with the original sandy areas dotted with clumps of wiregrass for the previous U.S. Open at Pinehurst. But it's all about the domed, Donald Ross greens. That much hasn't changed. Th…

Louisville's police chief suspended over her handling of sexual harassment claim involving officers
Louisville’s mayor is placing the city's police chief on leave over her handling of a sexual harassment allegation involving officers. The surprise announcement of Chief Jacquelyn Gwinn-Villaroel’s suspension came Wednesday night. It's been less than a year since Gwinn-Villaroel became the first Black woman to lead the department in a full-time position. Mayor Craig Greenberg says the chief was not directly involved in the harassment incident. But he says he is concerned with the way she handled the allegation once it was reported to her. Louisville’s police department has had three full-time chiefs and three interim chiefs since 2020.
South Carolina man pleads guilty in federal court to fatally shooting Virginia police officer
A South Carolina man has pleaded guilty to federal charges in the shooting death of a police officer in southwest Virginia in 2021. Thirty-six-year-old Michael Donivan White of Cross, South Carolina, had already pleaded guilty to first-degree murder charges in state court. On Wednesday he pleaded guilty to federal counts including drug charges and causing the death of a person with a firearm. The plea requires the judge to sentence White to a term of 40 to 100 years. His previous plea deal also calls for a sentence of 40 to 100 years. In court papers, White admitted that he shot Big Stone Gap police officer Michael Chandler in November 2021.
High school biology teacher looks to make the most of his 'Tin Cup' moment at the US Open
Colin Prater feels a little like Kevin Costner’s character in “Tin Cup” this week — a relative unknown who suddenly finds himself on one of golf’s biggest stages at the U.S. Open. So you can't blame him for being a little nervous. After all, his full-time job is a biology teacher and golf coach at Cheyenne Mountain High School in Colorado Springs. He punched his ticket to the U.S. Open by finishing second at a 36-hole qualifier in Bend, Oregon. He's had a chance to practice this week with former U.S. Open champions Wyndham Clark and Jordan Spieth, as well as Will Zalatoris and Sahith Theegala. And he's even gotten advice from Rory McIlroy. Now his goal is the make the cut.

Southern Baptists narrowly reject formal ban on churches with any women pastors
Delegates at the Southern Baptist Convention’s annual meeting have narrowly rejected a proposal to enshrine a ban on churches with women pastors in the denomination’s constitution. Opponents argued the proposal was unnecessary because the SBC already has a way of ousting such churches. The outcome still leaves the SBC with its official doctrinal statement saying the office of pastor is limited to men. Even the opponents of the ban said they favored that doctrinal statement but didn’t think it was necessary to reinforce it in the constitution. Southern Baptists also elected a new convention president and passed a nonbinding statement cautioning couples about using in vitro fertilization.
